I was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, where I attended public schools, explored the forests, canyons and streams of the Rockies, played sports—and read books. I was always reading. I remember riding my bicycle the several miles to my elementary school for the book fair, browsing the selections with an insatiable hunger tickling my gut. We filled out order forms and then waited forever (two weeks? a month?) for the books to arrive. I spent a lot of time dreaming of the discoveries I might make in those pages. It was an exquisite agony; nothing else made me feel that way. I bought and read all kinds of books, but my favorites (beyond Paddington, whom I loved as a best friend) were far-reaching adventures and fantasies.

Very early on I began to realize the only way to truly get at that hunger inside me was to write my own stories. I wrote dramatic sagas, plays, poems, short detective sketches, little tales of all sorts. And then later, as an adult, magazine articles, humor pieces, short stories, serious novels. However, for diverse and mysterious reasons, it took me many years of writing to return to my first and most genuine love: those tales of adventure and fantasy I discovered at the book fair (and poems, always poems).

Other details...I studied English Literature at the University of Colorado and Reading University (England). My life companion (eventually we married) and I have lived and worked in many places, including Seattle, England, Spain, New Mexico, New York, and now Oregon, with our two children. I suspect we will always be exploring, learning, delving; and though our roots may not be tied to one place, they are certainly binding us deeply to the people we meet and the land we inhabit.  It is all, in the end, connection.
